The Mall is the central point of most visits to Washington -- is the area with Constitution Avenue to the North, Independence Avenue to the South, 3rd Street to the East and 14th Street to the West.

Tour the National Monuments and Memorials on your Washington DC Romantic Getaway

Our favorite was The Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool The memorial is an iconic place and the view from the steps toward the Mall is breathtaking. Try to be there for the sunset for great views over the reflecting pool toward the Washington Monument.

Visit Museums -- and grab a lunch at one of the National Museum of the American Indian or National Gallery of Art.

National Gallery of Art's Cafe of the East Building serves dishes themed on the newest exhibit.

On the first day we had lunch at the cafeteria of the National Museum of the American Indian. Yes I know it sounds not very romantic and we were not expecting too much either. However we were proven wrong as the food was of high quality and creative -- just make sure to grab a table next to the window with a view of the active creek bed flowing below. The museum’s diverse wetlands area—and the ducks, squirrels, and dragonflies that make it their home—represent the original Chesapeake Bay environment prior to European settlement.

The Mitsitam Café features authentic Native foods found throughout the Western Hemisphere, including the Northern Woodlands, South America, the Northwest Coast, Meso America and the Great Plains. Each of the five food stations depict regional lifeways related to cooking techniques, ingredients, and flavors found in both traditional and contemporary dishes.

The National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C., is located on the National Mall between the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum and the U.S. Capitol Building. Its worth a visit on a Washington DC romantic getaway.

Cherry trees line the walk way around the basin and give way to great picture taking opportunities of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial. The famous sakura (Japanese cherry trees) of Washington line the Tidal Basin and are the main attraction at the National Cherry Blossom Festival in early spring, when the cherry blossoms bloom.

The explosion of white-pink clouds of cherry blossoms happens in late March or early April. The thousands of cherry trees are spectacular in the fall as well.
