Romantic Montana Vacations and Getaways
The word adventure could have been coined with Montana vacations in mind. For active couples you couldn’t ask for greater diversity. Go camping in a private wilderness space where you can hold hands under the stars. Jump in a raft and roll lazily down a river. Fish, hike, ski – and so much more.
Montana has some of the most stunning wilderness in the world, so Montana romantic getaways or honeymoon definitely are not getaways where the camera should stay home. Two of the main attractions for a Montana getaway are Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park. Glacier National Park was home to the Salish, Kootenai and Blackfeet people, all of whom consider this area sacred. In 1900 the region became a Forest Preserve. And even with all those trees there’s plenty to keep you busy. Take a walk with one of the rangers on your Montana vacation to see the Park in a whole new way.
Go backpacking, or get on a boat and learn about the park’s geography. As for Yellowstone National Park, this area was set aside in the late 1800s as protected land and it’s a great place to watch wildlife including bison. Of course there are the geysers and hot springs, but the fun doesn’t end there. The park also offers horseback riding, biking, and plenty of places to have a quiet romantic picnic.
One thing that attracts many couples to Montana romantic getaways is the fact that it’s not over-developed. Unlike going to many other tourist attractions, you rarely find crowds or long lines. That means you can really unwind in a frontier atmosphere.
For those who don’t want to “rough it” there are also various resorts suitable to your tastes and budget.
The number of historic sites throughout Montana is nearly staggering. You can see Custer’s Battlefield, Little Bighorn, the Lewis and Clark Caverns, Old mines & ghost towns, and even places where you can try panning for gold or sapphires (hey, maybe you can get that ring!).
The Native American culture is rich throughout the region and you may have an opportunity to watch some customary dances or crafts. While you’re wandering around, gather up some local huckleberries or enjoy treats made by the locals.
Montana Vacations County by County
Montana is a pretty big expanse, so rather than rush your vacation or honeymoon you may want to focus on one particular area of the state. The first county is Glacier County tucked up in the Northwest corner of Montana. Common activities in this area are down hill skiing, cross-country skiing, boating, camping, hunting and fishing.
North-Central Montana vacations
In North-Central Montana you come to Russell County. This region feels (and often looks) like the old West. You almost anticipate a cowboy riding up any minute. This is a good location for museums and art lovers (home to Charlie Russell). It’s also a paleontologists playhouse where many dinosaur remains have been uncovered. Missouri River Montana vacations
Moving into the Northeast part of the State, we come to Missouri River County. As the name implies this is home to the Missouri River, the longest river in the use measuring well over 2,000 miles in length. Fishing is one of the favorite pastimes for visitors and locals alike. Gold West Montana vacations
Between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park you’ll find Gold West County. As the name suggests here is where the Gold Rush has left an indelible mark on the region. If you’re looking for a little fun – go hunting for agates or gold, or check out an old western style ghost town. Yellowstone Montana vacations
South Central in Montana is the Yellowstone region, covering 2.2 million acres. South east of that is Custer, named after Lt. George Armstrong Custer and the point of a famous scuttle with Sitting Bull in 1876. This region is rich in fossil dig sites.
Romantic Montana Vacations and Getaways
No matter where you travel on your Montana vacations you’ll find something interesting – be it a brewery, a bike trail, hot springs, rivers, and even a casino or two. This diversity appeals to a wide variety of tastes, and explains why Montana is rapidly becoming more popular as a wedding and honeymoon destination. There are ranches throughout the state where you can enjoy all the wilderness of the State, and all the comforts and amenities you’d like. The ranches usually offer horseback riding, meals and local tours.
